Austin Blueberry – Vaccinium ashei ‘Austin’

A rabbiteye blueberry with large fruit and the flavor is often compared to a huckleberry. This rabbiteye blueberry was introduced by the University of Georgia. It is widely adapted across the Southeast southward to north Florida. It requires 500 chill hours that is 45 degrees farenheit and below. Austin can be harvested from June  to July 10. The plant structure is spreading, squatty and only somewhat upright with many canes per plant. The fruit is large size, medium blue, with outstanding flavor often compared to that of huckleberry and with good firmness.  Plant in full sun and in a soil that is acid with a ph of 4.0 to 5.5.  Hardy in zones 7-9.  Grows to 6-8 feet tall after 3 years or so.

Austin blueberry is not self fruiting and requires another variety as a pollinator such as Brightwell which we also sell  HERE.

Description

Austin Blueberry – Vaccinium ashei ‘Austin’

The Austin Blueberry is a very early variety that is excellent for use as a cross pollinator with others. The fruit is also of good quality. Its production level is high. The berry size of the Austin Blueberry is large and ranges 20% larger than the “Brightwell” blueberry, and when considering all cultivars of the rabbiteye varieties, the Austin is judged as the best. The new shoots of the Austin blueberry are a bright aqua-green color with bluish overtones and can emerge rapidly during rainy seasons; the foliage is dense, and a cluster of blueberries often can contain 20 or more large berries. When harvesting the Austin Blueberry, the clusters of blueberries can be easily picked off the branches, and that leaves no berry scar when detached. Austin ripens a week earlier than the standard “Brightwell” cultivar.

Austin Blueberries are large, easily picked rabbiteye blueberries that can be eaten fresh or used for juices, jellies, canning, or freezing. The Austin blueberry has an early ripening period, with the berries ready to pick in late spring or early summer. It is also a high producer so there will be plenty of berries to go around. The bush has an open habit and grows around 6-8 feet tall. Austin blueberries require 450-550 chill hours. It can be planted in full sun or partial shade, but grows best with afternoon shade.
