Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea

Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea – Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Merritt’s Supreme’

One of the showiest and most popular summer-blooming garden plants, with large deep pink globe-shaped flowers all summer long, somewhat coarse leaves; blooms on old wood so protection of flower buds over winter may be necessary. It will grow to be about 5 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet. It tends to be a little leggy, with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth. It is not particular as to soil type, but has a definite preference for acidic soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in both summer and winter to conserve soil moisture and protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates.

Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea – Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Merritt’s Supreme’

‘Merritt’s Supreme’ is a mophead-like cultivar that typically grow 3-4’ tall and as wide. It features rose to red sterile florets in huge spherical clusters. Flowers bloom in early summer for up to two months. Great plant to group or mass plant in the shrub border. Also a good specimen or accent for foundations and other locations near homes or patios. Makes a beautiful hedge. Good for containers.

Best in part (afternoon) shade. If you site them in a spot with afternoon shade, you’ll only have to deep-water established plants occasionally when the weather is exceptionally dry. In full-sun locations, you have to keep the soil consistently moist. Plant these shrubs in well-draining soil that is rich in organic content, layering on 3 inches of shredded bark, peat or compost as mulch. If your plant is blue and you prefer pink, add lime to the soil some months before flowering. For bluer flowers, add aluminum sulfate. Once your ‘Merritt’s Supreme’ is established, you’ll only need to prune to remove dead or damaged stems in late winter.
