Minerva Althea-Hibiscus syriacus ‘Minerva’

This shrub has single lavender/purple blooms with red centers and is easily grown in average medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun. Prefers moist, organically rich soils, but tolerates poor soils and some drought. Very tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Generally tolerant of urban conditions. Prune to shape in spring. Pruning back to 2-3 buds in late winter may produce larger blooms. Easily propagated by stem cuttings. May be grown from seed, but seedlings may not have the exact same flower color as the parent. Species plants can self-seed aggressively in optimum growing conditions.

Description

Minerva Althea-Hibiscus syriacus ‘Minerva’

Compact, deciduous shrub selected for abundance of superior, continuous flowers with longer bloom season and little to no seed production. Purple flowers have a pink overlay and dark red eye. Dense habit of handsome, leathery, dark green foliage creates a wonderful informal hedge or screen. Highly tolerant to air pollution and drought.

This is not a fussy plant. You won’t even have to prune it to keep it flowering profusely.
Drought-tolerant.At first, after you plant Minerva Hibiscus in your garden, you’ll have to keep it watered to help its roots become established. But mature plants are highly drought-tolerant, so you’ll only need to water them during long periods of no rainfall.

Deer-resistant.It’s so tough for many gardeners to find plants that deer won’t chew to the ground! Although even thorns and thistles won’t stop a ravenous deer, Minerva Hibiscus is remarkably deer-resistant.

Easy Care and Design Tips:
Finding the perfect planting spot where Althea will give you her best performance is easy as 1-2-3: 1) full sun, 2) well-drained soil and 3) an early-spring application of a slow-release fertilizer. This well-mannered plant is equally at ease as a landscape specimen or container plant. You’ll have to keep container plants watered more often, but the extra effort is worth it if you want to make an impact statement — plant Althea shrubs in matching urns on either side of your home’s sunny entrance for a glorious show of color all summer long!
